The Ashburn Methodist Church will celebrate homecoming this Sunday, July 23, 2006. The church was organized in February, 1889, three months after the Georgia, Southern, Florida railroad was completed for the line from Macon to Pulaski, Florida. J.J. Williams was the first preacher. He was paid $2 for his sermon by John West Evans and asked to come back and preach again the next Sunday.

The attached picture below is in the April 5, 1912 issue of the Turner County Banner. Notice the home in front of the church which is long since gone. It belonged to a Luke. P.E. Dennis of Macon was the architect. The stain glass windows were provided by the Atlanta Art Glass Company. Fourteen of these will be memorial windows. The church was originally expected to cost $30,000, but in the end it costs $50,000. The auditorium was built to seat 450 people. The church is a duplicate of Centenary Methodist Church in Macon.

Happy 117th birthday Ashburn United Methodist!
